How to Improve the Quality of Your Indoor Air

house with ranking of air quality graph
What activity do you spend more of your time doing than anything else? Breathing, of course! Yet, no matter how important it is to have access to safe, unpolluted air, the fact of the matter is that most people underestimate the importance of quality indoor air.

That is, at least until they develop chronic respiratory problems from constantly breathing in air that contained serious pollutants. In order to improve the overall quality of your indoor air, it’s necessary to use the correct tools for the job, and that means using cutting edge air monitoring equipment.

Use Sensors
The biggest obstacle to improving Indoor Air Quality is not having the proper tools to measure it. Unlike smog, pollutants in the indoor air environment are generally not visible. You could be breathing them in all day, for weeks or months at a time, and not even be aware that you’re doing so.

This can create major problems, since chronic exposure to even small amounts of pollutants can cause serious health problems. In order to make sure that your air quality is meeting high standards, you need to be using an air quality sensor, which will give you the necessary information on any pollutant issues before they become significant dangers to your health.

Clean Up Your Circulation
Indoor air quality can degrade over time precisely because there is so little circulation. The same stale air can get circulated and recirculated inside your home again and again, collecting more pollution and impurities that compound over time.

These impurities can settle into your ventilation system, ensuring that your air environment continues to degrade as you run heating or cooling systems. Make sure to use air circulators that will introduce fresh outdoor air into your home so that you don’t end up with stale, polluted air constantly circulating in your home.

BMS: Building Management System (BMS)

Belimo actuators
Building Management Systems provide your office or workspace with an opportunity to monitor, interact and manage the internal systems of the building. Here are a few systems that can be managed by a Building Management System (BMS).
·         Building Automation Systems (BAS) – The centralized remote monitoring and control system includes electricity, plumbing, ventilation, water supply and environmental control systems.  A BAS utilizes a singular, centrally located device for controlling all of the systems to ensure reliable conditions for employees, tenants and machinery.
·         Security Automation System (SAS) – Safety is the most important function of BMS systems. This is classified as a SAS. A Security Automation System works with anti-theft, alarm and access control systems to ensure the safety of employees, equipment and nearby residents. The use of a SAS adds alarms to the existing control features to ensure that the proper management systems are notified of any breach in access.
·         Fire Automation System (FAS) – The Fire Automation System is usually a separate system as it used an independent network to communicate with the fire department during an emergency. In many cases, companies can have two levels of fire automation systems to notify the central control system as well as the proper emergency fire services.

Why It’s Important to Maintain Your Air Quality Systems

air quality stamp
When it comes to maintaining the quality of our personal environment, many of us will pay lots of attention to making sure that our water is filtered or that our food is organic and pure. However, lots of homeowners and business owners will still neglect the most important resource that is necessary for survival: our air.

Air quality, whether you’re in a private residence or a business, too often takes a backseat to other forms of environmental monitoring. This is a major mistake, since indoor air pollution can cause all sorts of detrimental effects. In order to ensure that your health doesn’t suffer, you should be making air quality monitoring a priority, and you should be ensuring that your monitoring systems are well-maintained.

Indoor Pollution
You should definitely make sure that all of your air quality monitoring systems is taken care of, from filtering to flow sensing, in order to ensure that you are safe from indoor pollution.

Indoor pollution can be even more damaging and ruinous to your health than heavy urban smog, because you can be exposed to indoor pollution for longer periods of time, often without any sense of the damage that it’s causing you. Without a properly maintained air quality system, you’ll be at the mercy of whatever particles and pollutants that your ventilation system has picked up over the years.

Keep Your Air Safe
A well-maintained air system will not only be beneficial for your health. It will limit you to liability exposure for any adverse health effects that could arise from unsafe air. In a business, poor air quality can mean the difference between a happy workforce and one that is constantly sick and unproductive.

What’s more, in a scenario where an employee developed chronic health problems due to poor air quality, the legal headaches would be immense. Avoid all that by properly maintaining your air quality systems.

Building Automation Systems and Why They Matter

Building Automation Systems have three main functions for the smart building. To understand the best reasons for a BAS, it is important for each business owner to see the benefits to the bottom line. Here are three motives to running your building through a BAS.
·         Save the Building Owner Money – Utility bills can be increasingly expensive for a company. The more efficient a building is, the less energy needed to power it. Having your building in sync with the common use of a room, or the median temperature outside can help to dictate the level at which the HVAC unit must run. With a decrease in manual alteration of these systems, they can perform at ideal levels.
·         Comfort/Productivity – The comfort of the occupants in a building can lead to higher productivity. Employees work best in a relaxed environment where they are not concerned with temperature or safety within their work zone. Keeping a building monitored properly will help to ease employees’ minds, as well as keep them comfortable to be their most productive.
·         Reduce Environmental Footprint – Improving overall performance within the building will help to decrease the later environmental factors that lead to the increase in greenhouse gas emissions. Indoor air quality can also be improved. This will continue to increase moral and employee comfort.

Honeywell Analytics 301C Controller

Providing Solutions for Safe Parking Garages

The Honeywell Analytics 301C Controller detects, monitors and controls gases.  It is energy efficiency and easy to install.  The controller can allow up to 126 zoning groups and can manage up to 180 events with programmable latching alarms.  Using an addressable RS-485 communication protocol, the 301C uses daisy chain wiring to connect up to 96 transmitters in three loops. This simplifies installation.  BACnet/IP is available. The 301C’s zoning, voting, and averaging abilities reduce operational and maintenance costs. When the 301C is used for a gas detection, your structure is compliant with the industry’s most demanding safety and energy guidelines. The 301C controller offers automatic sensor identification and unique zoning capabilities. Readings from transmitters can be evaluated by averaging or voting. For example, voting can be used to activate fans only when one-third of the sensors in a zone report gas, thus avoiding excessive response to a single car idling. Time delays can be configured to prevent false alarms or to reduce power cycling of a fan.  The controller can detect when a single sensor reading is higher than others. Responses can be made to match time of day, day of week, or other external input. This flexibility can precisely meet the needs of each installation, thus saving energy and extending equipment life.  The 301C controller provides a complete gas detection network for the intelligent building.
