Belimo's Non Fail-Safe Actuators Are Used For Many HVAC Applications

You may be asking, what does non-fail safe mean?  For HVAC actuators “non fail-safe” denotes that the device stays in its last position setting upon power loss or disruption to it. By contrast, a fail-safe actuator returns to a pre-set position.  Non-fail safe actuators have their place in most applications, due to their ability to mount just about anywhere, and integrate with control systems.

Belimo Air Controls produces several different model types for the building controls industry.  Below is quick run-down of their non-fail safe options.  Torque requirements are the main difference between these, but each also has multiple variations for power requirements, signal types and connectivity.

The PM Series - for torque requirements of 1400 in-lbs [160 Nm]

The GM Series - for torque requirements of 360 in-lbs [40 Nm], 90 sq. ft.

The AM Series - for torque requirements of 180 in-lbs [20 Nm], 45 sq. ft.

The NM Series - for torque requirements of 90 in-lbs [10 Nm], 22 sq. ft.

The LM Series - for torque requirements of 45 in-lbs [5 Nm], 11 sq. ft.

The CM Series - for torque requirements of 18 in-lbs [2 Nm], 4.5 sq. ft.

The UMB Series - for torque requirements of 9 in-lbs [1 Nm], 2.25 sq. ft.

The Belimo CMB24-3, offering 18-in lbs of torque, is a Non fail-safe actuator.

Product Spotlight: Johnson Controls V46 Series of pressure actuated modulating valves.

Produced for both refrigerant systems as well as saltwater applications, the V46 series from Johnson Controls features numerous benefits.  This series was designed to be “direct-acting” with quick open option on increased pressure, and “reverse-acting” to close on pressure increase.  These devices control water flow to a condenser by sensing the changes in pressure through a refrigerant cycle.

The valve design is pressure balanced so that the setpoint is separate from the water inlet pressure.  These include pressure resistant bellows where refrigerant pressure grows up to 28-bar.  Likewise, the V46 series is pressure-actuated for fast and direct variations in pressure. They offer a high flow capacity with their smaller dimensions, in both angled body types and straight line, available in 3/8”, ½” and ¾” for a high Kv value.

The V46 pressure actuated valve with angled body type

Other features include:

Reduced Hysteresis: The close fitting and sliding parts are within water passages.

Easily Disassembled/Replaced:  Valve is designed for easy repairs “in line”.

Durability: bodies and monel parts are made of special bronze, excellent for sea water applications.

Power Elements:  Some models include stainless steel bellows for applications with ammonia filled equipment.

Connection Styles Options:  A wide range of types to meet various requirements.

Nickel Plated Seats:  available on valve sizes of 3/8", ½" and ¾” openings, they offer resistance against corrosion, cavitation and erosion.

Control Action:  Direct or reverse action can be factory changed to suit your application.

JCI notes that all of the V46 series regulating valves were designed as operating devices only.  In several applications where valve failure might result in personal injury or loss of property, it is required to install a separate safety shut off valve.

Belimo's NFB Series Damper Actuators

Belimo, the industry leader in Air Flow Controls, sets the standard for damper actuators in the HVAC market.  Their NFB Series is a type of “Mechanical Fail-Safe” which means these include an internal mechanism that stores energy to drive an actuator motor to it’s predetermined ‘safe’ position in the event of power loss.

The New Generation NFB/NFX series of spring return actuators was designed for several applications including control valves, make-up air units, retrofit, replacement and control dampers designed up to 22 square feet.

The NFB24 Damper Actuator

Here are some of the benefits and features of the series:

  • Torque: With 50% more than previously offered, the NFB series now boasts 90 in-lbs of torque.
  • Smaller Housing:  The re-design of the body features a reduced footprint with the edge to shaft-center distance shortened by .75” which makes the device easier to install in tighter spaces.
  • Manual Override:  Now standard on all NF Series configurations.
  • Power: UPS can accept 24 VAC (up to 24) VAC.  The actuator is ideal for all power supply voltages.
  • Cable length options: Now offered are 3’, 10’ and 16’; same as the non-spring return models.
  • Mechanical limit stop:  This is now built-in, and no longer a separate accessory.

Belimo Damper Actuators provide versatile operation and yield energy savings with their low power usage.  They perform reliably and safely, by utilizing rugged components.  They communicate directly with BAS (Building Automation Systems) via BACnet, Modbus or MP-Bus.  Finally, they offer unsurpassed accuracy and control without loss in their performance due to supply voltage, temperature, or speed.

Since 1975, Belimo Air Controls has been the leader in field devices for the HVAC industry.  Find the Belimo NFB Series or any other damper actuator the produce at E-Controls.net
